Prague’s astronomical clock celebrates 600th anniversary

 Prague, Oct 9 (CTK) – Hundreds of inhabitants and visitors to Prague saw in the Old Town Square a videoprojection on the 600-year-old history of the astronomical clock, a national cultural heritage sight which is the city’s familiar landmark.

The 10-minute video was projected on the outside wall of the Old Town Hall on which the astronomical clock is installed.

The astronomical clock was made by Mikuláš of Kadan in the early 15th century. The clock is firt mentioned on October 9, 1410.

It was later allegedly imporoved by Master Hanuš of Růže.

The legend has it that the Prague town councillors had Hanus blinded in order to prevent him from making a copy of the clock.

He allegedly stopped the machine in revenge.

In fact, the clock machine stopped functioning in 1865 and there was the threat that it will be removed.

However, clockmaker Ludvík Hainz eventually succeeded in reparing the mechanism.

The astronomical clock attracts thousands of tourists a day. It is veiled in many mysteries. It is not, for instance, known when the statuettes of 12 apostles that appear every hour in two small windows under a small roof were placed in the tower.

The astronomical clock has been repaired many times, the last time in 2005.

Prague airport steps up security over terrorist attack warning

Patrols at Prague international airport have been reinforced with police carrying submachine guns and by dog-handlers over the U.S. warning against terrorist attacks by the Al-Qaeda network in Europe, Czech Interior Minister Radek John told journalists yesterday.

An armoured personnel carrier arrived at the airport, too.

John said the measures were preventive. He added that the increased guarding did not slow down the operation of the airport in any way.

The police adopted the stricter security measures at Prague airport on Sunday. The Interior Ministry said then that the threat of an attack did not directly concern the Czech Republic.

At other Czech international airports more thorough security checks were introduced, too.

The police have also reinforced patrols at some other strategic facilities.

The U.S. administration issued a warning against terrorist attacks for U.S. citizens travelling to Europe. It called on them to be cautious mainly when visiting public places. The warning is general and does not mention any particular country.

Prague – Less than one month before the Czech municipal elections, Prague’s politicians has received a rather serious message from the inhabitants of the capital.

More than one third of Prague’s inhabitants would like to move to a different place during their life, according to a poll conducted by the Dema agency.

Citing their reasons, most of them stated they want more contact with nature, breathe healthier air, and to own a house, instead of living in a flat.

Half of those who think about leaving the capital already know when they want to do it. Some 21 percent of them would prefer to leave Prague in 2 years, 32 percent in 5 years. The rest of them have no clear idea.

The poll results are very important, because the parties that will win in the upcoming municipal elections in October will determine the development of Prague in the following four years. And in their programs, they comment on some of the problems that make every third inhabitant of the city think about leaving.

Onnellisesti yksi iloinen ilta Prahassa on takana, ja minun kohdaltani luonnollisesti Hard Rock Cafessa. Pakko myöntää, että Prahan HRC on yksi parhaimmista missä olen koskaan vieraillut. Palvelu oli hyvää ja nopeaa, ottaen huomioon, että talo oli tupaten täynnä koska kyseessä nyt sattui olemaan perjantai-ilta. Mitään ongelmia ei pöydän saamisessa ollut, eikä jonoakaan sisälle mentäessä. Tunnelma oli aivan uskomaton. Henkilökunta oli mukana ja show pyöri tuttuun Hard Rock Cafeen tyyliin. Tämä paikka on jokaisen Hard Rockari ehdoton vierailukohde. Ja totta kai kun henkilökunnalle vielä selvisi, että asiakkaana on pinssien keräilijä ja nyt 32 HRC:tä kiertänyt asiakas niin palvelu parani, muutamalla tarjoilijalla oli jopa aikaa hetkeksi istahtaa pöytään.

Ruoka oli tuttua ja turvallista; alkuun Jumbo Combo, pääruoaksi Mediterranian Burger, yksi olut, pari limua ja tupla expresso hintaa koko aterialle tuli 1060 CZK eli 45 €, jota pidän ihan kohtuullisena ottaen huomioon, että kyseessä on kansainvälinen ketju ei paikallinen ruokaravintola. Rock Shoppiin upposikin sitten hieman enemmän rahaa kun piti täydentää omaa pinssikokoelmaa. 13 pinssiä hintaan 2984 CZK eli 127 € But it´s worth it. Ruoassa ja pinsseissä oli lisäksi 10€ alennus.

Ja tämä päivä tuo tullessaan kiertelyä vanhassa kaupungissa paikallisoppaan seurassa. Ensin täytyy löytää vain opas.

Minä suuri maailman matkaaja

Vihdoinkin olen saapunut Prahaan, ja täytynee myöntää, että saapuminen hotellille oli jo pienoinen urakka.

Jos ihminen ei asu Helsingissä häntä ei ole luotu matkustamaan, ei ainakaan aamulla. Jos kerran ihmisiä kehoitetaan matkustamaan julkisilla kulkuneuvoilla voisi julkiset yhteydet myös järjestää niin, että matkustaminen olisi hieman helpompaa eikä kenekään tarvitsisi hengailla Helsinki-Vantaan lentokentällä yli kuutta tuntia. Tästä hieman oppineena matkustin sekä yksityisellä kulkuneuvolla lähimmälle linja-autoasemalle (n. 80km), että pääsisin hieman pienemmällä odottelulla lentokentällä (ainoastaan kolme tuntia). Onneksi lento oli ajallaan ja mitään lisä odotteluja ei tästä aiheutunut. Lentomatkakin meni mukavasti. Finnair pääsi lähtemään hieman etuajassa, joten vastatuuli ei haitannut ja Prahaan laskeuduttiin ajallaan.

Lentokoneiden ateriatarjoilut on aina mielenkiintoista seurattavaa. Onneksi nirso ihminen pystyy olemaan syömättä muutaman tunnin. Jotenkin vehnäleipä, joka oli täytetty salaatinlehdellä ja muutamalla sivulla kinkkua ei inspiroinut tällä kertaa. Miksi lyhyillä lennoilla tarvitsee ylipäätänsä tarjoilla kiinteää ravintoa?

Varsinainen hauskuus alkoi Prahan lentokentällä. Koska olin varannut lentokenttäkuljetukset etukäteen etsiskelin tuloaulasta kuljettajaa, jolla olisi kyltti minun nimellä varustettuna ja löytyihän se. Tosin kyseessä nyt kuitenkin oli eri saman niminen henkilö. Tämä paljastui tosin kun matkaa oli taitettu vartin verran moottoritietä ja puhelimet alkoivat piristä, sekä kuljettajan että minun. Kuinka voi olla, että samalle lennolle eksyy kaksi sukunimeltään samannimistä henkilöä. Ottaen huomioon, että allekirjoittaneella nyt ei ole Suomen yleisin sukunimi. No, huumorilla ja seikkailumielellä tästäkin selvittiin ja pääsin omalle hotellille tosin pienen mutkan kautta. Mitä tästä opimme? ehkä jotain.

Hotellien kuvaukset ovat aina erittäin mielenkiintoisia. Onneksi kahdeksan vuotta ulkomailla asuneena ja paikkaa ahkeraan vaihtaneena olen ihan työnkin puolesta oppinut olemaan hieman varullani mitä tulee hotellien nettisivujen kuviin. Mutta, eihän sitä hotellihuoneeseen olla aikaa tultu viettämään. Huoneisto, jonka minä sain käyttööni vaikuttaa kieltämättä hieman kuluneemmalta mitä hotellin omat sivut antavat ymmärtää. Recidence Verona nyt kyllä on ihan asuttava, mutta nettisivujen lupaus ”euromodernista” hotellista lienee ainakin tämän apton kohdalta hieman kaukaa haetulta. Tosin kaikki mitä sivustolla luvataan kyllä löytyy äkkiseltään tarkastettuna. Ja hyvin varustetusta kitchenettenistä voidaan aina olla montaa mieltä. Edelleenkään en tullut liiemmin aikaa viettämään huoneistossa taikka gourmet aterioita kokkaamaan. Kyseiseen varustukseen kuuluu mikro, jääkaappi, kaksi kahvikuppia ja lasia, tuhkakuppi sekä suuri luksus salaatinkuivain. Siis sellainen muovinen härveli, jossa on vipu ja salaatinlehtiä voi pyöritellä hulvattomin kierrosnopeuksin. Lautasia tai muita ruokailuvälineitä en toistaiseksi ole löytänyt. Ja viinipullonavaajaa olen oppinut kuskaamaan mukanani menin melkeimpä minne tahansa. Lisäpeittoja ja tyynyjä on useammallekkin henkilölle. Tallelokero on, jonka avaimen saa käyttöön 500 CZK panttia vastaan.

Aamupala-palvelua kovin hotelli on mainostanut ennakkoon. Jättämällä aamupala tilaus lomakkeen vastaanottoon saa nauttia aamupalan huoneistossa rauhassa. Ja noita lomakkeitakin varmaan jossain on. Mutta ilmainen wi-fi yhteys toimii moitteettomasti, ainakin vielä.

Ja nyt pienet ”power-snapsit” ja ilta riennot odottavat. Toissa yön muutamalla nukutulla tunnilla pitäisi pärjätä. Ensimmäisen illan ruokatarjonta on kaikkea muuta kuin tsekkiläistä. You Know Who You Are, Love All Serve All menttaliteetillä mennään eli suurena Hard Rockarina jalat kuljettavat minut Prahan Hard Rock Cafeeseen, repikää siitä. Mutta ensin ne ”power-snapsit” ja suihku, sitten menoksi laadukkaan seuran saattelemana.

Kyllä niitä valokuviakin tänne jossain vaiheessa varmaan ilmestyy.

Tšekissä mielenosoitus palkanalennuksia vastaan

Noin 40 000 mielenosoittajaa on marssinut Tšekin pääkaupungin Prahan kaduilla vastalauseena hallituksen suunnittelemille budjettileikkauksille ja julkisen sektorin palkanalennuksille. Mielenosoitus on Tšekin suurin vuosiin.

Tšekin keskustaoikeistolainen hallitus haluaa supistaa budjettivajetta, joka on tänä vuonna arviolta 5,3 prosenttia bruttokansantuotteesta.

Osana budjettileikkauksia hallitus aikoo alentaa julkisen sektorin palkkoja Pääministeri Petr Necas on luvannut alentaa julkisen sektorin palkkasummaa kymmenellä prosentilla nykytasosta. Necasin mukaan säästötavoitteesta ei tingitä, mutta vähennysten rakenteesta voidaan neuvotella ay-liikkeen kanssa.

Julkisen sektorin keskipalkka on hiukan alle tuhat euroa kuussa, mikä on hiukan yksityisen sektorin keskipalkkaa korkeampi.

Julkisen sektorin ammattiliittojen mielenosoitukseen osallistui poliisin arvion mukaan noin 40 000 ihmistä. Ympäri maata kokoontuneet mielenosoittajat kerääntyivät sisäministeriön eteen ja marssivat kaupungin keskustaan.

Tšekin valtion velka vastaa 37,5 prosenttia bruttokansantuotteesta, mikä on noin puolet EU:n keskitasosta.

Hitlerin Taisteluni määrättiin tuhottavaksi Tshekissä

Tshekkiläinen oikeusistuin on määrännyt tshekkiläisen kustantamon tuhoamaan Adolf Hitlerin muistelmateoksen Taisteluni koko painoksen. Asian oli vienyt oikeuteen saksalainen Baijerin osavaltio, jolla on Taisteluni- eli Mein Kampf -teoksen tekijänoikeudet.

Tshekki on yksi niistä Euroopan maista, joissa laki kieltää natsiaatteen levittämisen. Vuonna 2000 tshekkiläinen tuomioistuin langetti ehdollisen vankeustuomion ja kovat sakot toiselle kustantajalle Mein Kampfin julkaisemisesta ja kansanryhmien välistä vihaa lietsovista puheista.

Czech taxi ripping you off? There’s an App for that

Thousands of visitors have fond memories of the medieval Czech capital Prague, with one exception: getting ripped off by a taxi driver.

But a Czech firm, Et netera, said on Tuesday it had developed a weapon to eradicate the long-lasting problem, a mobile phone application using the global positioning system that measures the distance and calculates the proper fare.

”Everyone will be able to verify right in the taxi whether the driver is trying to rob him,” the company said in a statement introducing the service, called ”virtual metre.”

Some dishonest drivers have been using ”turbo” meters charging illegal higher fares, taking passengers via the longest possible routes, refusing to produce receipts, and there has even been a case of a driver who had wired up the seats so he could deliver an electric shock to any troublesome passengers.

The city of Prague has for years fought to clean up the taxi service, with some success, but hailing down an unknown cab on the street is still risky. Several years ago, the Prague mayor was himself overcharged during an inspection ride.

Et netera said it was offering its system to the city, with the capability to directly report dishonest drivers to the regulator. Downloading the application should be free.

The firm said it decided to offer the system to city hall after one of its foreign business partners fell prey to an overcharging driver.

Prague zoo opens new exposition with rare shoebills

The Prague zoo Saturday opened a new exposition, Swamps, with shoebills on display, a rare bird species whose home habitat are the swamps of central Africa.

Only some 40 shoebills live in zoos all over the world. They are extremely difficult to breed in captivity. To an extent, they are as rare exhibits as the giant panda, for example, Prague zoo director Miroslav Bobek told reporters.

The zoo has kept two pairs of shoebills for several years now but they have not been displayed for visitors. This is what experts reproached to the zoo’s previous director Petr Fejk.

The new exposition will present one of the pairs, a male and a female, both coming from Tanzania.

Bobek described them as maybe the most beautiful and most bizarre birds in the world. They are blue-grayish, 120 cm tall and with the wingspan of 120 cm. Their enormous bill reminds of a whale head or a boat.

The shoebill population in the wild is estimated at 8,000.

”They hunt for fish but also water snakes and small crocodiles. …If a man goes missing in the swamp, the blame is put on the shoebill,” Bobek said, referring to African legends.

Due to the birds’ sensitivity, world zoos failed to breed them until recently. The first successful attempt was in Belgium in 2008, when the keepers raised two young artificially.

Prague’s two pairs are a rarity in the former Soviet bloc countries. The pair on display shares the new pavilion with other bird inhabitants of swamps, representing Europe, Africa, America and Australia. For the first time, the Prague zoo visitors can see the Hamerkop, the Wattled Crane and the White-Headed Lapwing.
